If the advantage of nickel alloys is their high strength, maintained up to very high temperatures, excellent creep-rupture strength at temperatures up to 600 degrees. Their disadvantage is that they are very dense and difficult to work. Machining of Inconel bar is achieved with reinforced ceramic tools with high-pressure coolant supply pressure, because tool life and surface integrity are both real issues. Nose wear and tool failure is common when machining with coated carbide tools.
